Where pension capital meets purpose: LGPS Central backs Equitix for long-term impact

A partnership case study

Shining a light on our collaboration with LGPS Central, a local government pension pool responsible for managing more than £45 billion on behalf of eight Partner Funds across the Midlands, this case study sets out how this partnership facilitates long-term pension capital to be directed into essential UK infrastructure to support both financial returns and wider positive outcomes.

The film examines two distinct types of infrastructure assets to illustrate this in practice:

• At Pritchatt’s Park at Birmingham University, investment has supported the delivery of 1,380 modern, low‑carbon student homes, designed with renewable power and sustainable technologies to meet the needs of a growing student population.
• At the other end of the spectrum, the Greenlink interconnector demonstrates how infrastructure can strengthen national energy resilience, enable the flow of renewable electricity and assist the transition to a lower‑carbon system.

For LGPS Central, infrastructure of this nature is an important part of meeting the long-term needs of its Partner Funds. The pool currently allocates £1.75 billion to infrastructure – an asset class valued for its resilience, inflation linkage and ability to deliver predictable returns ever extended time horizons. These investments also reflect LGPS Central’s commitment to ensuring that capital contributes positively to the places where its members live and work. Projects such as Pritchatt’s Park and Greenlink illustrate how financial and societal objectives can be achieved alongside one another.

LGPS Central has partnered with Equitix since 2021, during which time £115 million has been committed across more than 25 projects spanning renewable energy, student accommodation, healthcare and community assets. This enduring relationship is underpinned by shared principles: a focus on long-term stewardship, an emphasis on responsible investment, and a commitment to supporting essential UK infrastructure. Equitix’s approach to sourcing and managing assets complements LGPS Central’s objective of delivering strong financial outcomes alongside broader community benefits.
