Transport for Wales

Today Transport for Wales saw the first of 11 Stadler Class 231 FLIRT Trains in operation on commuter lines across central Wales.

These units have been built for Transport for Wales by Swiss rolling stock manufacturer, Stadler, widely regarded as best in class, and are proudly owned and leased by Equitix and SMBC Leasing (UK) Limited, supported by Apex Rail GmbH and IPEX Consulting. The remaining stock will gradually come into service over the coming months and comes as part of an £800 million rail investment by Equitix into rolling stock across Wales in 2023/24.

Equitix continues to make significant investment in Wales, including five renewable energy sites, five social infrastructure projects, an Energy from Waste plant, in addition to the investment in rolling stock. Providing sustainable, energy efficient assets and developing the region as part of the wider UK levelling up plans remains one of our key business objectives.

Lee Waters MS, Deputy Minister for Climate Change at Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government, was among the first to ride on one of these innovative trains in the region this morning. Watch his reaction to these spacious, modern, quiet and sustainable vehicles here:
